The Reluctant Discarder loves the idea of selling things
About 60% of our customers at Peaceful Place are what I call Reluctant Discarders and have some degree of excessive attachment to things. It's not their fault they have this tendency. It’s both genetic and environmental - this is what they saw growing up.
One of the go-to tactics their inner Reluctant Discarder uses is selling things, or yard sales, as a way of delaying letting go of things. And the RD insists on pricing at $5 less than it would cost to buy it new. So it won't sell. Again, it is an avoidance tactic.
A lot of people are efficient and pragmatic at selling things and get it done and have uncluttered homes. But the people with a lot of clutter? Not so much. They want to be the person who sells things. They have every intention of doing it. But they just don't end up doing it. The logistical realities of getting it done are the biggest obstacle.
That's why in my company, we don't sell things for clients. We just donate it all. And no one ever regrets it. Instead, they are thrilled with having a decluttered and organized home.
See the beautiful yard sale with the happy couple in the picture below? This is never going to happen.
